The First Attempt - Is Letter Writing a lost art or is it just better penmanship?

You know this is one of those things you think you'll never do. A public blog....I'm no writer. But in order to improve my writing skills I'm taking a chance here.

I remember getting 'letters' in the mail. Letters that someone had taken the time to write me that meant so much to me. Today we have such a 'electronic' society...and we think we are connected....but the letters...real letters handwritten by people who took time and, perhaps, even over several days seem to be missing for me. The thought of someone thinking of me long enough to write me a real letter. You got more than you ever imagined from them....heartfelt thoughts.....hearts longings. Finding stationary....even picking the color you were going to write with seemed so important. I even remember wax seal you'd melt to seal them with a special stamp of your monagram or personality. You know I remember picturing my grandmother, or my aunt, or a boyfriend sitting writing me. They spent time to write....to to think about me. They took time to write in a way that I might also be enticed to write back. I truly could feel their emotions in their letters.

So, I am looking online for those folks who might be really 'writing' each other rather than forwarding poems or chainletters....and really not 'fighting' with each other. I enjoy reading a forum but honestly it is SO easy to cut something down when you are ANONYMOUS. Email is more like a quick phone call....I'll give you the question...and you send me a quick answer. Although some folks really do try to include a personal line or two...they really don't measure up to a hand-penned letter.

So here is what I'd write a friend today:

Dear Friend,

As I look out my window today I have spotted two little squirrels. I am glad my dog has not yet seen them...she is sleeping at my feet. The squirrels seem to be enjoying burrowing through my yard looking for acorns or some other food. They seem able to scramble up the trees and gracefully leap from branch to branch without falling. It is almost like watching a ballet with the music I have playing right now. The very little one darts quickly ahead as if playing a game of tag at times. The leaves dance in the wind after being launched by the squirrels. I hope they come back again soon.

I hope all is going well for you and yours. With the start of a new year all of us seem to making new resolutions. My best wishes that you will be able to keep yours. I have been thinking about mine for the year. Of course...continuing to lose weight and having a more consistent fitness schedule is there. But also I think I'm going to look for a new activitiy to be involved with after my work day. We can all use a few more friends. Perhaps I'll take up tap dancing ....or go back to school.....we never stop learning.
So I'll close in saying....Enjoy your day. You'll be in my thoughts!
Sincerely,
C
